Trans Health

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer gender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

We refer to local GPs who specialise in GAHT/HRT.

Do you offer general GP services?

At this time, we refer to local LGBTIQA+ friendly GPs. We welcome collaborations with GPs and would love to hear from you. Please email info@rainbowhub.com.au for more details.

What guidelines do you use?

We adhere to the AusPATH (Australian Professional Association for Trans Health) Standards of Care and are proud supporters of the informed consent model.

Can you write a 'WPATH letter'?

We are happy to provide so-called WPATH letters, referring to the World Professional Association for Trans Health Standards of Care, that surgeons often (but not always) require. Our letters outline your understanding of treatment and capacity to make informed decisions. We do not attest to whether you are really trans or fit any particular stereotype. We do not require to you attend any particular number of appointments.

Do you offer oestrogen or testosterone implants?

Yes, our GP colleagues are able to offer implants and can talk to you more about your options.

Do you offer treatment to stop periods?

Yes, our GP colleagues can talk to you about your options for medication and refer you for surgery if desired.

Do you offer services to people under 18?

Yes, our GP colleagues can talk to you about your options for puberty blockers, hormones, and stopping periods and  legal requirements for accessing gender affirmation treatments.

What if I'm non-binary or don't have a gender?

We do not discriminate against people on the basis of gender identity or expression. What you do with your body and socially is ultimately up to you. We just expect you to have adequate plans and supports for how to handle changes that inevitably occur with hormones and/or surgery and be able to give informed consent.

Do I have to tell my family?

We recognise that biological relatives may not be the closest or most important people in your life. We do not require you to tell your biological relatives that you are trans or intersex or that you are seeking GAHT/HRT. We do expect you to have adequate support around you to handle the changes that come with this kind of treatment, which may be a combination of professionals, friends, partners, and/or chosen family.

Do I have to tell my job/school?

While we don't require you tell your job or school right away, people will begin to notice changes in your physical appearance. You need to have a plan for how to handle this and what support you are likely to need.

Do I need a 'Real Life Test' or to be 'full time'?

We do not require, expect, or recommend you to be living full time in your new gender. This can present real dangers for a lot of people and is an outdated requirement.

Do you see children and adolescents?

Yes, we see trans people of all ages and their families.
