Psychotherapy, Psychology, Counselling, and Family Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I see your profiles?

On our staff profiles page! If there is someone you're interested in seeing who is not yet listed, please e-mail info@rainbowhub.com.au.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to see us for psychology, social work, psychotherapy, counselling, or family therapy. You may need a referral for accessing Medicare or private health rebates, though, for example seeing our social worker or psychologist on a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Referrals can be sent to referrals@rainbowhub.com.au

How long is a session?

Typically, a session is 50 minutes (one 'therapy hour'). This allows time for scheduling and notes. It also allows us to be fully present with you and with the next client. In some cases, especially with families, an 80 minute session may be more beneficial.

How much do you charge?

Our counsellors and provisional psychologists charge $150 per 50 minute session and $225 per 80 minute session for individuals, $200 and $300 respectively for 2 people, and $250 and $375 for 3 or more people.

Our psychiatrists charge $400 with Medicare safety net resulting in an approximately $200 gap per session over the year for weekly therapy.

Our registered psychologists and mental health social worker charge $250 per individual 50 minute session, and up to 10 sessions receive a Medicare rebate under a GP Mental Health Care Plan.

What if I'm experiencing financial hardship?

We are able to provide flexibility with fees and timing of payments, if you are experiencing financial hardship. Please talk to our mental health hub practice manager Sue if you need financial assistance. Otherwise, all services are to be paid for at the time of service.

Is there a Medicare rebate?

There is a Medicare rebate for our registered psychologists, nurse practitioners, and doctors. Our counsellors and provisional psychologists are unable to offer a Medicare rebate, unfortunately.  However, you may find that a counsellor or family therapist offers more value for money for medium and long term therapy, because they have a lower cost than psychologists or psychiatrists over time. Ultimately, therapy works when there is a good therapeutic relationship, regardless of the therapy used or therapist's qualifications.

Is my therapy covered by my private health or NDIS?

Most private health funds offer a rebate for psychology, counselling, dietetics, and/or family therapy. Depending on your disability and approved services, your NDIS plan may cover these therapies. Doctors' fees are not rebated through private health or NDIS, only Medicare. You need to check the specific requirements for your health fund or NDIS plan to be sure of your coverage. We are not responsible for whether your health fund or NDIS provides a rebate.
