Psychotherapy, Counselling, and Family Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I see your profiles?

On our staff profiles page! If there is someone you're interested in seeing who is not yet listed, please e-mail info@rainbowhub.com.au.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to see us for psychotherapy, counselling, or family therapy. You may need a referral for accessing Medicare or private health rebates, though.

How long is a session?

Typically, a session is 50 minutes (one 'therapy hour'). This allows time for scheduling and notes. It also allows us to be fully present for the next client. In some cases, especially with families, an 80 minute session may be more beneficial.

How much do you charge?

Our counsellors and family therapists charge $150 per 50 minute session and $225 per 80 minute session for individuals, $200 and $300 respectively for 2 people, and $250 and $375 for 3 or more people.

Our psychiatrists and registrars charge on the assumption of a 48 week therapy year (allowing for holidays and absences) and meeting the Medicare safety net resulting in an approximate $220 gap per session over the year.

Our psychologists charge $250 per 50 minute session, and up to 10 sessions receive a Medicare rebate under a GP Mental Health Care Plan.

What if I'm experiencing financial hardship?

We are able to provide flexibility with fees and timing of payments, if you are experiencing financial hardship. Please talk to your therapist if you need financial assistance.

Is there a Medicare rebate?

There is a Medicare rebate for our psychologists and doctors. Our counsellors and family therapists are unable to offer a Medicare rebate, unfortunately.  However, you may find that a counsellor or family therapist offers more value for money for medium and long term therapy, because they have a lower cost.

Is my therapy covered by my private health?

Most private health funds offer a rebate for psychology, counselling, and/or family therapy. Doctors' fees are not rebated through private health, because they are eligible for Medicare rebates. You need to check the specific requirements for your health fund to be sure of your coverage.
