Autism Assessment

Frequently Asked Questions

What does assessment involve?

We offer autism assessment to children, youth, and adults. Assessment is comprehensive, involving information gathering from multiple sources and administration of formal assessment measures. The assessment process involves a series of questionnaires and interviews and is followed by a report and feedback session.

Where is the assessment held?

We offer assessment for people who are 15+ by telehealth or in person. Younger people should ideally be seen in our office in Bendigo, although there may be the possibility for some or all of the assessment to take place via telehealth depending on your circumstances.

Is there a waitlist?

Generally, we are able to see you within 1-2 months.

Do I need a referral?

We are happy to see you with or without a referral, but referrals may make you eligible for a Medicare rebate.

How much does the assessment cost?

For an assessment with a summary report, the price is $1200. For an assessment with a detailed report, the price is $1800. For support applying to NDIS, there is an additional cost of $400.

Is there a Medicare rebate?

In many cases, the answer is yes. It depends who are you seeing and who is referring you.
If you are seeing one of our psychiatrists or registrars, you need to have a referral from your GP or specialist. We prefer that referrals be made to The Bendigo Rainbow Hub as open referrals given the potential for multiple professionals to be involved.

If you are seeing one of our psychologists, in order to receive a Medicare rebate, you need to be under 25 and receive a referral from a psychiatrist or paediatrician. If you have seen one of our psychiatrists or registrars for something else, they can refer you to one of our psychologists.

How should I prepare?

It can be helpful to bring any previous test results such as school reports, imaging, your list of medications, and other medical history, especially if you have childhood medical reports or letters. On the day of assessment, ensure you have had adequate sleep, food, and water. You may want to bring snacks.

Can someone else attend with me?

You can bring support people no matter their relationship to you. There may be limited space in the assessment room, so please let us know if you are bringing more than 2 people.

If it is someone who knows you well, they can be very helpful in adding to your interview.

How long will the assessment take?

The interview can take up to 2 hours, and feedback sessions are up to 30 minutes. Not everybody needs this long, but please budget enough time when planning your day.

Do I have to involve a parent?

If a family member or someone who has known you for a long time is available, this enhances the process. We understand, though, that not everyone has contact with people from their childhood and are happy to work with you to obtain the best and most accurate information possible.

Are my results confidential?

Your report will be shared with your referrer, if applicable. You will also receive a copy, and you can choose who else you want to see it.
